Farm Pump Starting Loads in Solar Storage Projects

Assessing solar battery storage for farm pump starting current requires the motor and starting method, a record of the startup event, and the limits of the proposed power source. Daily pumping energy alone cannot establish whether a battery-inverter system will start the pump reliably.

For EPCs and remote-site integrators, the first task is to turn “run this pump from solar storage” into a usable equipment brief. Keep the water requirement, electrical demand and source capability in the same project record.

Identify the complete pump arrangement

Collect the pump and motor nameplates, supply voltage and phase, controller or drive model, and the current installation diagram. Distinguish a conventional AC motor from an integrated electronically controlled pump or a dedicated solar pumping arrangement.

The starting method matters. For example, Grundfos confirms that its SQ/SQE pumps incorporate soft start to reduce startup current. That statement applies to the named pump family. It does not establish the starting demand of an unidentified pump or prove compatibility with a particular battery inverter.

Ask the pump supplier for the data applicable to the exact configuration, including any requirements placed on an upstream inverter or power supply.

Request the startup evidence that design needs

Data requestWhat the record should identifyDesign use
Startup demandCurrent or power trace, measurement point and durationCompare with source transient capability

Running conditionFlow, head, electrical input and operating timeLink electrical demand to water delivery
Restart patternStarts per hour and expected cyclingReview repeated transient demands
Shared loadsEquipment operating when the pump startsAssess total source demand

When measurements are needed, assign them to a qualified person using an agreed procedure. A slow average reading may not describe a short startup event. Request a suitable capture method and the raw record rather than accepting a single unexplained peak number.

Compare duration as well as magnitude

A source overload rating is useful only with its time conditions and other limitations. Ask the inverter supplier to review the pump’s demand over the complete starting interval. Include the intended phase arrangement and any restrictions associated with a motor drive.

The battery review should cover the corresponding DC demand, BMS limits and the proposed module arrangement. Ask how the pairing behaves at the lowest intended operating state of charge and relevant temperature. Do not apply a universal startup multiplier or assume that increasing stored kWh fixes a power limitation.

If the proposed solution changes the starting method, the motor and pump supplier should review that change. A soft starter or drive is a project design choice with compatibility conditions, rather than a guaranteed accessory fix.

Connect water duty to the operating schedule

For a hypothetical planning case, a measured 1.5 kW electrical input running for two hours uses 3 kWh at the load. This arithmetic says nothing about startup capability and excludes conversion losses, reserve and other site loads. It is not a product recommendation or an evjrich performance result.

Ask whether pumping can occur during solar production hours, whether water storage can shift demand, and what happens when the required water volume is not delivered. Water storage may offer an operating option, but its suitability depends on the agricultural process and site constraints. Record any overnight or emergency pumping requirement separately.

Agree a representative evaluation

An acceptance demonstration should state the pump configuration, hydraulic duty, starting sequence, simultaneous loads and source conditions. Record unsuccessful starts and protective interruptions as well as successful runs. Use a professional plan to resolve abnormalities before committing the configuration to the project.

Vanguard’s OEM electrification guide discusses using prototype testing to capture application load information. For a pump project, that principle supports obtaining evidence from the intended equipment instead of relying on a generic estimate.
